Install x86_64 hangs

I have attempted to install the x86_64 DVD iso and it freezes on the main screen. This is the SUSE 10.0 EVALDVD x86_64 iso.

I have checked the md5 on the iso and it is correct (don't know how to check the burned version mind you...) In anycase the DVD boots successfully, and displays the main splash screen. After the splash screen the main screen is displayed with several options (boot from hard disk, install, etc.) there is a counter on this screen and I can see it decrementing from 20s. As soon as I press any button on keyboard (usually down arrow to navigate the install options) it will freeze.

That is as far as it will go on my system.

My hardware is as follows...
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Abit AN8 SLI motherboard (I don't use the SLI part)
1gig of Ram
160g SATA HD (may be sata II dunno)
ATI Radeon X700 video card

The hardware works great on my XP 64bit partition, but I want to use this machine for Linux instead...

Thanks in advance!
Steven

Hello,

the count-down means nn-seconds until the default option is selected. If you press a key, this counter assumes you want to select another option or want to change some other options.

Just choose the right option and press "enter".

Yes, that is true. However, when I press the down arrow to select a different menu option, the screen freezes. The selection remains at the default and never moves. It just crashes.

I took the time to download the CD version of SUSE 10 x86_64 and the same thing happens with that version. All the md5 checksums are correct...

It sounds more like a hardawre crash, like the keyboard press kills the system. It is possible your keyboard and possibly mouse might not be compatible, if it only happens upon key press. If you use a different keyboard/mouse uring install, what happens?

I just tried again with a different keyboard (the one I am using with my RHEL 4 system) and that didn't work either. I also tried removing my mouse and that didn't make a difference either.

I have two variations of this distro, the DVD and the CD, both have the same issue. I agree that it is most likely some kind of hardware issue, I just don't know how to work around it...

First I tried to turn DMA off for both the DVD drive and also for the hard drive. I even turned off prefetch mode for the hard drive and none of those worked. Still the same hang situation.

Finally, I tried a different CD ROM drive that I have. That CD rom drive didn't make a difference, it crashed in the same spot...

Any other ideas?
