I need some help setting up a laptop monitor

I posted a display problem in the Linux Newbie section, I reinstalled, and got it working, so I have a question that I think should go in this section.

I have a Dell 600m, and I have SuSE9.1 installed dual boot with XP. The resolution is way to low! I can use the system, and before I go playing with the settings, (like I did before) I need to know what Dell monitor to select? When I am prompted to set up the monitor manually, I get a list of about 70 Dell monitors. Any help on which one I should use? I think I need to set that up, then adjust the resolution, my current setup fails the x test? I booted into win xp and ran Everest and Sisandra, and both listed the monitor as generic plug and play, no model number. I bought the computer used, So I have no way to get the model number.

Any help is greatly appreciated! I really need to increase the resolution.

Oh, yeah, it has an ATI 9000 mobility card on the motherboard.

Thanks

E

Are you talking about the laptop screen on the laptop or an external monitor. If the laptop screen then there is usually a generic LCD near the top maybe. Selct one of those.

Thanks for your reply, there is no true generic in the list. I tried laptop LCD and I cannot get the resolution above 640x800 without a 'split' screen, that is not usable. I reinstalled again, and hit F2 and chose 1400x1050, and it was great during the install, and is still good in a cli. But when I boot it, I have a cartoon sized desktop desktop!

I tried installing the Radeon drivers from ATI, I put them on a CD and cliked on it, then installed it using Yast, but I still cannot increase the resolution without a messed up screen.

During the install, I have an option of testing the monitor, I have tried about 10 or so different ones, and all of them fail some kind of x test? So I assume I need the right monitor selection, or I did not install the driver correctly.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! And I am talking about the laptop screen. 640x800 is not a good resolution.

Thanks again

I found what you were talking about, I was looking for a generic in the Dell section. Looks like it is working fine now.

Thanks for your help.

Glad to see you have it. Not a SUSE user but figured there was a display config tool. I figured it was like many other distros. All use things a little differenet.
