How to stop modules loading
 

How do I stop modules from loading at bootup? I removed a card but the modules that were previously loaded to service it are still loading. I used modprobe -r to remove them, lsmod showed them gone, but when I booted up again there they were again.

Maybe comment them out in /etc/modules.conf or equivalent file

Yes I looked in /etc/modules.conf but it's an empty file (0 bytes). Where might an equivalent file be located?
