Start "YaST2" and go to Software -> Community Repositories. Add the "vlc" and "packman" repos. This will allow you to install versions of the multimedia programs that can play the proprietary file types like mpg and mp3.

There is a user guide pdf in the /doc/ directory of the install disk that will introduce you to the multimedia apps such as xine, mplayer, amarok, xmms, etc.
