How to Install XGL/Compiz in OpenSuse 10.2

My PC specifications are :

- Intel Pentium-D 2.66, 768MB RAM, Kernel 2.6.18.8, OpenSuse 10.2, KDE 3.5.7.
- Display : Intel 865 G, Driver: i810 (3D Support)

As I don't have any extra graphics card like NVidia cards can I use compiz/xgl on this PC?

one would think http://forum.beryl-project.org/viewt...st=0&sk=t&sd=a

fyi - beryl was a fork of compiz that has since remerged but any beryl (or compiz) instructions should work

checkout http://forums.opencompositing.org which are the new compiz-fusion (remerged beryl and compiz)forums

Thanks for the links. Actually the second one (OpenCompositing) has moved. I am going through the first one.

I tried on my own and got limited success in installing XGL. I found XGL is working in my PC but the problem was neither any of the window had frames and nor I could input anything through the Keyboard. This was when I had my 3D disabled. May be some kind of display driver issue.

Thanks again for your help.

Update :
Success. I have been able to successfully run Beryl in my PC without adding any extra hardware. The themes are working and I now need to learn how much better I can user Beryl. It's wonderful to see Beryl working. I almost lost hope. From my early experience I find graphics are somewhat slow. It is taking time to scroll through any page in browser. I hope that problem can be solved.

Thanks.

What issues did you run into? Did you enable xgl? Did you have issues starting beryl?

Do you know Beryl is depreciated? you can try installing Compiz Fusion

http://www.benkevan.com/blog/compiz-...-opensuse-102/

You can read a blog I wrote about Compiz Fusion on 10.2 with an NVIDIA card.

For your intel card you will have to install XGL enable it and go from there..

Yes, I am aware that Beryl is depreciated. In fact I tried to install Compiz but I had problem in making Compiz run correctly in my system. When I am trying to run Compiz, the X server is crashing and I find myself in the text mode. This has happened several times. Being just a normal level user I could not solve the issue on my own. That is the reason I started this thread.

But now I have hope because of your help. Your blog is really very helpful.

As I have Intel Card, I will try to follow the procedure for Intel cards. I have installed XGL, Compiz and Beryl.

I will give Compiz another try and let you know about the experience. It would be great if I can make Compiz work properly.

Thanks for your help.

Update
--------
Now Compiz is working, at least I can see that in action when I use the shortcuts. It seems to be working faster than Beryl in my system. So thanks to you I switched over to Compiz. But still there remain one small problem.

I can't seem to find a way to change window decorations. Like in Beryl I used to change window decorations through Beryl-manager, where just selecting a theme changed the window frame, here nothing happens when I do that. I tried to find compiz manager in YAST but could not find one. After much effort I installed the Emerald manager but it is not working due to some library missing (I installed through Yast). I also can't see the compiz logo anywhere.

Please help.

Sorry to keep pointing you to blogs bug check:
http://www.benkevan.com/blog/?p=66

Which is a new post that I did today regarding upgrading to the Dev release of Compiz Fusion 0.5.2.

In that post I inlude the new repository to use, and also a rpm -qa | grep compiz of what I have installed from that repo.

So remove everything except for licenses from Cyberorg Repo, add the new X11:XORG repo, and install Compiz and the other packages I show on there, you should be set )

Thanks the link to a great blog. It's really helpful.

The status at my end is I have installed Compiz from Opensue repo. Everything is working well.

But I would like some help from you regarding how to install Compiz themes. Because as I mentioned it was easy to change themes in Beryl. I can't do that in Compiz.

Thanks again for your help.

I am not quite sure what you mean by "Compiz Themes".

If you are talking about the look of the bars etc, those are actually Emerald Themes, and can be changed by the emerald theme manager:

emerald-theme-manager (in a konsole)

or

Computer --> Applications --> Utilities --> Desktop --> Emerald Theme Manager

As for going back to Kwin / Metacity incase of a crash, that is not in Compiz, although I find very fewer crashes with the WM running Compiz with the Nvidia native drivers.

Yes you have correctly understood. I want to change the window decorations. I understand that it needs to be done by Emerald, but I find that while Emerald is working correctly with Beryl it is not working with Compiz.

That means When I change the window manager as compiz via Beryl Manager and also change the window decorator as Compiz KDE Decorator it chooses the current KDE theme. At this stage if I open up emerald and try to change themes nothing happens. But when I choose Beryl as Window Manager and as window decorator then changing window decorations through Beryl manager is working.

In summary I felt may be I need something like Compiz Manager which changes themes through beryl. And I don't have any Compiz manager.

------------------------
Update : The problem seems to have been solved. I installed the git versions and then chose Beryl Emerald as window decorator. Now it's working. I am not sure though whether this is how thing should be done but it is now working for me.
