The instructions were for 10.0 and 10.1. openSUSE 10.2 is still in development so packman and guru don't have any repos for it yet.

redazz, this is a great article! As I use PC mostly for computing, I often have distro installations without functioning multimedia - sound and pix. (I have partitions for 7 [no, there is 8-th small partition hdb3 for a "puppy") Linux versions on my PC).

I used your article step by step to activate Xine on a suse 10.1 and it worked like a charm. In fact, I made a copy of your article on my private wiki (MoinNoin desktop wiki - shared with other installations of Linux on my PC).

Not knowing about this thread, that is what I did to get audio running on suse10.1. Works fine, with one minor glitch: no sound upon return from suspend. Not system sounds, mp3, ogg. Nothing. Works fine after reboot though.

Any ideas?

Second question. I've been using yast2 on dialup line. I've added maybe four or five repositories in total (including the packman and guru ones referred to by the amarok wiki above). Now, any attempt to modify installation sources is taking forever. I've had to give it up and #ps -e then kill the process after about half an hour or so. Will the smart package manager (recommended in the first post) help for future installs?

Using dial up will cause a lot of headaches because some of the files needed by smart and the packages from some of the smart repos are quite big so will just choke up your net connection. Maybe you need to get a distro that includes most multimedia stuff out of the box e.g. Mandriva Powerpack.

I am not really sure why your media players won't work after suspend. It could be a bug with Suse or problem with your hardware. I use Fedora Core 6 on my laptop and it does not have such problems.

My had xine working perfectly under 9.3 but now I get the following error:

You need to install libexpat (or expat).

Smart says that expat is installed.

Oh, alright, I was going to move house anyway.

In the meantime, I'll reboot when / if I need sound, and consider the suspend problem to be a feature.

I've solved my expat problem.

For some reason I had 2 installs of Xine, one in /usr/bin/xine and the other at /usr/local/bin/xine.

/usr/bin/xine works.

Just to add that using 'xine-check' identified this for me and might be a good place to start if anyone else is having trouble getting xine to run

Suse 9.3 was working fine, why the hell did I go and mess it up by upgrading????

Xine can't find my bloody DVD drive now.

When I stick the DVD in it appears on my desktop as "MEET_THE_FOCKERS", how the hell to I set up a symlink for that?

Sheesh, I'm copping it in the neck because everybody has sat down to watch a flippin' movie and I'm in the back room trying to work out what's gone wrong.

It doesn't help that the brother-in-law says "This wouldn't have happened if you'd used Windows".

Have you tried right clicking on the dvd icon that shows up on your desktop and then selecting "Open with Xine" (or some other app you wish to use). If you are using KDE, there should be a dialogue box that shows up and asks you what you want to do when you insert discs and other removable media.
