How To Enable Automatic Loading Of KDE On Startup In 11.1

Hello

I have updated from 10.2 to 11.1. When 11.1 starts I get into the CLI rather than an automatic startup of KDE. I can login at the CLI, then type "startx" to start KDE. I know there is someway to automatically start KDE when the computer boots, but just can't seem to find it. Can someone point me in the right direction? With 10.2 I was able to automatically load KDE as myself as user and would like to have that again in 11.1. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Harpo,

I have this in my notebook it may help you.

To find problems:

less /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The most common problem at this place is that X cannot start because the configuration is not correct.

# yast2

and set the graphic card then exit yast and
# kill `pidof kdm`

# kdm

then Alt-F1 and

#exit

to logout root. Then

#exit

again to logout the user.

Now ALT+F7 to get back to the KDM login screen and login with your username and password.

come on people slackware. it is the
su then password kedit /etc/inittab change to default run level 4.
# These are the default runlevels in Slackware:
# 0 = halt
# 1 = single user mode
# 2 = unused (but configured the same as runlevel 3)
# 3 = multiuser mode (default Slackware runlevel)
# 4 = X11 with KDM/GDM/XDM (session managers)
# 5 = unused (but configured the same as runlevel 3)
# 6 = reboot

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:
then in kde control panel admin login manager convenience and click that auto login no password.
now reboot kdm starts and logs you in. if you log out you will then need a password to log back in or reboot.

Harpo, since you are able to start kde with "startx" it doesn't sound like there is an issue with the graphics driver so it may be that the system is defaulting to runlevel 3. openSUSE uses a slightly different scheme to the one employed by slackware. You can follow Drakeo instructions above but change the default runlevel to 5, instead of 4.

If that doesn't work, or it's already 5, then let us know because something else is going on.

I already had checked runlevel, and it is 5. Just for kicks I reinstalled it (not repaired) and the same thing happened only this time there was no taskbar on the bottom after I ran startx. I am finding this to be very odd. I am going to try and reinstall yet again to see if that makes any difference. Please keep the suggestions coming for me.

Harpo
You have some problem with the video drivers. If you reinstall opensue at the beginning og the installation press f3 and select the resolution you want and proceed with the installation. This trick help me a couple of time in previous versions of suse.
