How does OpenSuse 10.2 handle hot/auto mounting memory sticks/hard drives.

How does opensuse 10.2 handle the automatic mounting of usb/firewire memory sticks and hard drives?

I'm looking for a way to always mount a memory stick with a specific "shortname=" option but have no idea where to start. Every time I need to put something on the memory stick I have to insert it into my computer, umount it, then mount it again with the required "shortname=" option.
