Answered my own question by following the instructions here http://en.opensuse.org/VirtualBox_USB_Support but instead of adding the line to fstab which they recommend, I used the line listed here: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/User_FAQ. Also had to install pam-dev, kernel-source, and gcc. Creating filters for the USB devices seems to help Vista recognize them.
