How do set the resolution in Suse 11.3??

I have been searching for 2 days and cannot find an answer. Apparently Sax2 isn't available in 11.3. It looks as if many are having the same difficulty.
Has anyone figured it out? I've tried xrandr and tried to edit /etc/X11/Xorg.conf with no success.
Copying a working xorg conf file might be a fix, I don't know.

I have an Nvidia video card, and when I installed the software driver for it, there was a piece of software that allowed me to set the resolution. I found it in my menu under System > Configuration > Nvidia X Server Settings. It is set to 1650x1050.

If you have an nvidia card, look to see if you have something similar. Or, nvidia-xconfig on the command line might work.

Thanks for the reply, but my problems seem to go further than that. At this point, I can only start in "safe mode". When I try to start in regular mode it starts in verbose and comes to a login. I login then it comes back with a blank where you USED to type "startx", but that doesn't work anymore. I says it skipped all init5 services. So, while in safe mode I looked in Yast under expert, and vdm showed 5. So I don't know how to fix it. My resolution was fixed when I upgraded hoping to to fix it. ?????

It sound to me like you've recently upgraded the kernel, and now your nvidia driver isn't being loaded, hence it drops to level 3 command line, and not level 5 GUI login.

Here's a link on how to load the nvidia driver for a new kernel install. You'll have to do it each time the kernel is upgraded.

Thank you. I've hammering at this for several days. I kind of gave up and have just been running in "safe mode". It runs my 1280X1024 in "safe". I have no idea why it runs 1024X768 with a normal boot in.

I'm having the opposite problem, mine defaults to 1280 x 1024, I want to set it to 1024 X 768. I have an older NEC 17" LCD monitor and my vision ain't what it used to be, I can't hardly see stuff at the higher setting. After logging in I can set it to whatever I want and hit "apply" and it stays until I reboot or switch user, then it goes back to 1280 X 1024. I am using an nvidia GT240 card.

Did you try yast2. I used it quite some time ago. It should be still there I believe.

I did manage to fix mine. Part of the problem is the nouveau drivers loaded by default. I went to this page http://en.opensuse.org//SDB:NVIDIA_drivers and used the one click install method to add the nvidia repository and install the nvidia drivers. It was actually quite easy, even for me. After a restart I logged in as root and clicked the lizard kickoff button (KDE desktop) then "applications", then "system", then "configuration", then "Configure NVIDIA X Server Settings", then "X Server Display Configuration". I set the resolution then hit "apply". After telling it to apply you have to save it to make it survive a reboot. I did that by clicking "Save to X Configuration File".

That's all there was to it. I am now running with the nVidia drivers. Much better than the nouveau default drivers, at least on my system. For one thing desktop effects now works and I now have wobbly screens and other neat stuff to play with. Under the nouveau drivers some of my icons would show up in the system tray as just a blob of color. That is now fixed.
