How are unused packages safely removed?

Hello. I was wondering how I can go about removing any packages in my suse 9.2 installation that are not being used, or out of date etc. There seems to be no clear way to do this through yest, unless i'm missing something. Thanks.

In the yast controll center goto>Install&remove Software.
Search for programme you wish to remove, In rigrt collum right click on programme and Delete

I know how to uninstall programs, the problem is, sometimes when I do uninstall a program, it's gone but the dependencies it needed are still on the system, it's these many unused packages I want to eliminate.
For example, if a program once asked for me to install the package "gettext", i'd install it to satisfy the dependency. But if i no longer use that program, I would like to remove all the dependencies as well. I don't see how to remove all these many packages that are not in use.
Is there a way to make suse detect what files aren't used? I seem to remember somewhere an option saying remove unmaintained packages. Is this what i'm looking for? I can't remember where I saw that.
