Hey guys, ive kinda successfully gotten Xgl working in gnome on SuSE 10.1. Ive got the ATI drivers installed and working, and ive followed every set of instructions ive found to get Xgl configured. However when i go into the terminal and enter "compiz --replace gconf" to active Xgl, Xgl starts, but i lose the title bars on all my windows. The effects work fine, but i have no more title bars so i cant minimize, maximize, close or move any of my windows without right clicking them on the bottom. Anyone know what on earth is going on, I really am saddened to get this so close to working but have such a stupid problem happen. Thanks.
Try to restart X. It was doing that to me in Xgl w/ KDE if I pressed F11 to perform one of the effects. Its pretty odd actually, but what I noticed is that the title bar wasnt missing, its just the window was up out of view and you cant grab it. If you just restart the application you use it would reappear. I'm not sure if the same thing applies in Gnome, but it might help you.
Good luck!

I'm only using gnome and have restarted X several times with no luck.
sounds very like a broken "gnome-window-decorator". You should read the article http://en.opensuse.org/Using_Xgl_on_SUSE_Linux. I read it! There they tell you explicitely what you have to do:
Using Compiz with the KDE desktop
First, make sure you are logged into KDE just like normal. Go into "Personal Settings", then "Desktop", then "Taskbar". Make sure "Show windows from all desktops" is checked. (Currently this is required for proper functioning of the taskbar under Compiz.)
