Help - SMP Kernel fails for Suse 9.2 and 9.2 AMD 4400+

I need some advice compiling a kernel for Suse 9.2 or 9.3. I build a new computer around a Shuttle SN95G5V3 Box (nforce3 mainboard), with SATA drives and 2 GB of RAM. The processor is an AMD Dual Core 4400+.

When installed in 32 bit mode, Suse works fine. When installed in 64 bit mode, Suse crashes after GRUB with what looks like a memory dump to the console ending in "Console shuts up..".

64 bit non-smp compile of the kernel works. It sort of looks like the crash happens when the modules start to load, but it goes by to fast to see.

Has anyone been able to get SMP kernel to work on Suse with a 4400+ or 4800+ processor?

You are going to have to get us some info on that kernel crash pal...

Can you tell me how to do that? The crash is somekind of screen dump with what look like memory registers and actually programming code. It ends with Code: 40 ff ... followed by a string of Hex and then "Console Shuts Up"

Shift+PgUp doesn't work to scroll back, the /var/log files don't contain the screen dump.

This is the most frustrating thing. I can find a way to capture the screen. I wish I could hook my computer up to a dot matrix printer some how and let console messages print out. Can you tell me how to do that?

Other than that, I need some suggestions for capturing information you would find useful. I have been working on this for over a week.

Suse 9.2
default smp config file from /boot immediately after installation
smp is on from installation if I turn it off and recompile, 64 bit single processor WORKS
if I install 32 bit smp WORKS
if I try to recompile with smp on 64 bits, crash!

Is there a logging option I can add to the grub loader or the boot options to redirect console output during boot?

THanks
