HELP ! ! ! Problem of Display Settings in SuSE 9.2 Pro.
hi, guys, i have been using SuSE 9.2 Pro. Since last six months on my Toshiba Notebook.
Well, guys, everything is ok, except, the Display Settings of my Notebook.
First, i tell you the Display Settings which is shown by " sax2 " utility in SuSE Linux9.2................as following.
1. Monitor : " VESA 1152X864@75HZ "
2. Graphics Card : " Intel 855 GM i810 "
3. Color and Resolution : " 1280x800 24 Bit (16.8 Mio.) "
so guys, i need to know two things basically from you ,
First, What is " VESA " and is this correct monitor for my display screen.
Second, after knowing all my configuration , please tell me that how can i get that appealing and fantastic Colors, Brightness,Contrast etc in Linux. Please give me a piece of advice if any ....
Also, All over Display, Colors ,Brightness,Contrast etc is not as mindblowing in SuSE Linux as in Windows. So please quote me the configurations for Display Settings for the best results...
(V)ideo(E)lectronic(S)tandard(A)ssociation was established in 1989 to set and support industry-wide interface standards designed for the PC, workstation, and other computing environments (a simple google search answered that one).
To answer the second part:
You stated earlier in your message that your display was fine, therefore I would think that the VESA choice was the one Linux found to be the most <suitable/compatible> for your graphics card, it may not be the best choice, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Finally your conclusion about colour, brightness etc is a little premature since I would guess from the content of your post you are using SuSe with the default desktop settings! Find your Control Centre, have a play and see the Vast amount of tweaking you can do to your desktop environment, I challenge you to achieve the same in Winblows without having to load extra pieces of bloated software :-)
i have just installed suse 9.3 (text-based install) on my i810 based p3 machine, but i can't load runlevel 5. just when X is going to start, the screen blanks out and the monitor (samsung samtron 14" CRT) power LED just keeps blinking rapidly. i've tried SaX2 from command line, but to no avail. if anyone can help with regards to some hints or examples of editing any config files, it would be really appreciated.
VESA - YES; 1152X864@75HZ - NO
I use Amilo L1300 notebook with wide screen. And optimal resolution is 1024x768! Frequency of 75Hz means nothing on LCD screen! You can put there 100HZ and it would be the same screen even if frequency was set on 60Hz.
VESA is the best, maybee even the only thing for Intel 855 graphic card!
Setting up...
Right click on desktop - Configure Desktop - Display! There you°ll find "the stuff"...
I hope that I have been of any help for you...

Try from command line to open and change /etc/X11/XF86Config... I don°t know what to tell you... I even don°t understand what you mean...
In shell you have "nano" and "joe" text editors. example: nano XF86Config

you are spot on what i am trying to say, but the thing is (as far as i've done a bit of googling), the file to be edited is xorg.conf. so far all good, now the thing is usually YaST writes to this file whatever settings it has probed and gathered and comments it to indicate that it is a YaST generated file. now the problem is power went out exactly during the monitor configuration phase and that part never got written, hence all i have are the generic files with generic entries.
Yes, you are right, the file you want to look at is /etc/X11/xorg.conf Sounds like it may be driving the video output at too high a frequency for monitor. Check what the "HorizSync" & "VertRefresh" values are in the xorg.conf file and see if they are in a range supported by the monitor. If you have/can find spec's on the monitor it should say what it supports. You can manually change them in the file, or try running "yast x11" from the console and see if you can set the monitor to the correct model there, or set it to a genric choice.
