Help! Black screen instead of login screen! Intel integrated graphics
 

I installed openSUSE 10.2 on my system. Everything went OK. It ran fine. I was so happy.

One fine day, after installing Xfce 4.4 and disabling few bootup services, I do a reboot and get a black screen instead of a login screen!

I thought maybe the new Xfce packages or the disabling of services caused this.

So I do a clean fresh default install with KDE. Reboot.

And again get the same black screen!:cry:

Whats wrong here? I'm not able to figure it out. None of my hardware has changed. Everythings the same.

I'm scared of doing another reinstall but I REALLY REALLY wannna use opensuse 10.2....its THE BEST distro of all...I've tried many (PCLOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, Etch, Mandriva, Mepis etc.) but keep coming back to my beloved Suse:cool: One side comment: openSUSE's openoffice is so much better and more compatible than the ones which come with other distros!

Plz help me......I really wanna use my Suse:cry:

Need to check your bootloader.

Do you see the boot up process, or does it turn black immediately?

If you see the boot up process but it turns black before you can log in, then it is an X problem. If it turns black soon after the "OpenSUSE 10.2" selection countdown screen then it is a bootloader issue.

I think its an X problem coz it boots up fine but goes black just before I should see the login screen. But why is it happening? It never happened the last time I installed it?

This is weird...I reinstalled Suse 10.2 once more..rebooted...it was ok...again rebooted twice..got a black screen twice...again rebooted...now I see the login screen....whats wrong here? Sometimes it shows me the login screen and sometimes it doesnt?? Any explanations? My sanity needs protection!

Once it doesn't work, reboot until it works. (or try Ctrl+Alt+Backspace). Then /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old will be the previous time X tried to start, and /var/log/Xorg.0.log will be the current (successful) time X started.

Hopefully there's some useful information from Xorg.0.log.old as to why X ended up being a black screen instead of a successful run.

I'm sorry but I really got fed up with gettin black screens all d time so I have temporarily removed it with PCLinuxOS for now...

Most of the time, these problems are caused by the X setup--including the choice of video driver.
Assuming that PCLOS works reliably, then take note of the settings it uses in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Try these same settings with SUSE

If you have room, you can install SUSE alongside of PCLOS---then if SUSE gets weird, you cna reboot into PCLOS

I've been having the same black screen of death @ the login screen. I hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart X and I get the same black screen. I hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to console and everything works fine. I've tried this with SUSE Linux 10.1 and OpenSUSE 10.2. I'm running an AMD Athlon64 X2 +4800 (dual core 2.4GHz) with all onboard nVidia video components with two nVidia GeForce 7600 GS video cards running in SLI configuration. Please tell me what is going wrong, I want my SUSE to run. I've tried a livecd of Elive and it runs great, but I really want my SUSE back.

Are you using the default driver that came with suse (nv) or did you install the nvidia drivers?

PS: you should probably start a new thread or search the forums, since this one started out discussing Intel graphics and you probably won't get the best response by tagging onto the end of it.

Actually I did start a new thread, if you want to contribute to it, the more the merrier. I believe it's in the SuSE section. But to answer your question I am using the stock nV drivers, I figured that OpenSuSE 10.2 would have up-to-date drivers. The funny thing is that I have a liveDVD of Elive (Enlightenment's distro) and that works without problems, the only reason I don't want to install it is because it's debian based and not RPM based and all my linux programs are RPMs, plus I've never had much luck with debian based distros, I've tried Ubuntu and didn't like it as much as SuSE.
