hard drive is thrashing after SUSE install

hi-

i just installed suse 10.1. i went with GNOME just to check it out. I installed SUSE before and never had a thrashing noise all of the time. This install my computer is making lots of racket. The weird thing is i have 1.2 gb of ram and plenty of disk space.

The only thing i have noticed weird on the install is it hangs at configure auto updates waiting to connect to the server. After i while i bypass the screen because it wont connect. I have to configure it at some point though. The SUSE desktop froze once too.

Windows is just as quite as can be (dual boot).

I only gave it 2.0gb for swap space as i couldnt get partition magic to give it more. I wanted to give it 3.0 gb of swap space. But i dont think that is what is making all the racket.

Please offer a suggestion as to how i can quiet this system down.

I really like the menu now when suse loads and asks do i want to go into SUSE or windows. I think it looks better now.

I have more time now to spend with linux as i am just winding down from a project i was working on.

thanks for helping,
jim

hi -
i applied some patches with online update.
still making quite a racket.
i cant use it like this.
if someone gives me a tip i will try but
with all of this thrashing i dont want to run
it unecessarily anymore.

here is a print out of the top utility
mem: 1231656k
used: 526240
free: 703148
cached: 335068k
swap: 2094084k, ok used, 2094084k free
task: 94 total, 2 running 92 sleeping
cpu 0.7% us

hi-

i quieted it down by switching to ext2.
i dont trust it making the noise.
it sounds like it is wrecking my hard drive
with ext3 although now i dont think that
was actually happening based on the print out
of the top utility and observing the processes.

thanks very much,
jim

i am using ext2 now. i dont want to reinstall again.
thanks though. it is good to know for the future.

thanks again,
jim
