GUI problems need help...

Hi to All,

I am a newbie to Linux and just started hands on a few days ago, but, am stuck up with a problem which I am at a loss to resolve and hence this post. I am having a problem with suse 9.1 pro. the install goes on fine but when the time comes to set the config. the display test fails...! and there is no display there after. I have installed it a couple of times now and got in the GUI once and was very happy ! but then it was high resolutiong so changed the resolution thru YaSt and after that reboot...no display...I mean no GUI the Xwindows is booting...
Box Specs AMD 800MHz/256MB Ram/ Nvidia RIVA TNT2 / and Mag Techniology DX1495 monitor.

I beleive there is a problem of resolution with the monitor and the video card...cause it says the Device(0) MAGXXXX not found . I have selcted VESA with 1024x768 @60Hz. Now at the test in YaST it says ;;

X server test failed
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) no such device
(EE) No device detected

Also messages like 'failed to initialise X server" before loging prompt...

And now it boots text mode...!

please help...I was facing the same problem with Mandrake 10.0 official and got fed up with it and thought Suse would be better ..now I realise it's some thing to do with my hardware

thks in advance

Hi padixer!

Try running "sax2" as root when you reach the text mode. That will call SuSE's display configurator and you can start fresh. I can promise you that you graphics card is supported and I have one myself. Even Nvidia official drivers works with it (but you don't need them yet, until you fix your problem). So I am almost sure that your problem is the monitor, not the video device.

When running sax2 (if it runs) try using either a generic monitor and low refreshing rates (like 60 or less) and default resolutions (as 800x600 and 1024x768). Don't add any exotic values for both and see if that helps.

Good luck!
