GRUB reading fails at first reboot during installation

The old Pentium cannot boot from CD, so installation was started from diskettes. It's dual boot with Win98. When rebooting yet again, it says (command line) GRUB and then it hangs.

Have you ever been able to successfully boot? Have you tried to reinstall?

No I haven't been able to boot this one, so after each failed installation I have had to repair the MBR to make Win available again.

I have found a few oddities relating to hdb which is used for linux. (It worked with Win though.)

It finally went on air. Somehow the remains of a PartitionCommander (BootCommander) was mucking things up.
