I used to have installed on my desktop Suse 10 and Windows 2000. Windows on one disk and Suse on another. Because I will set the desktop as a server for my home network, I removed Windows and installed again on that disk, which was the big one, Suse. I have choosen during the installation that I don't want any booters to be installed so Linux will load directly. When the installation was fisnished and I was waiting the PC to boot into Linux I got on the screen the "minimal bash-like GNU BRUB...". How can I start my system from that or how can I just remove it and load directly Linux. For now I'm botting from the installation dvd.
Even with a linux only box, you need grub or lilo to boot the system.
Boot loaders like the default one (fdisk /mbr in DOS) or more advanced one like lilo and grub, play a major role in the boot process.
You have booting problems. I see. If you can boot your Linux from DVD, thats good. Boot it up, and go to YaST. Here navigate to the boot loader button, and click on it. Try to reinstall your grub. (If you change to LilO, and intall it, then change back to GRUB and install again, it must work, but try this option only if you do not have any other ideas!!!) If you installed grub successfully, thats very good. Now. If you do not want to wait, and you want to start Linux immediatly, then you must edit the menu.lst file (can be found in /boot/grub directory). If you opened menu.lst, then try to find a line like this: timeout="number" The "number" means a number which is written there. Its perhaps 15 or something. Now. Change this number to a very small number, like 1, or try 0,1 but it might not work. Reboot. Now. Maybe you won't even see grub. It looks like an instant boot, but its not. HAHA! Tricky. I made the same, but on a floppy. Hope its gonna work.
If you wanna boot from mini grub type these (if your Linux is on the second disc and on the 1st partition; you must know your kernel version, the x.y.z means numbers, the kelnel version numbers it starts with 2.6.):
