Suse will use what you tell it to use. One of the questions during the installation process is related to the boot manager, and gives you the option of installing lilo, GRUB, or nothing. If you chose to install lilo (the default is GRUB) then anytime an online update includes a kernel upgrade, then you need to run /sbin/lilo (as root) in order for the system to properly recognize the new kernel.
GRUB does not require that you rerun any similar commands, the new kernel will be recognized the next time you boot up -- J.W.
