I find gFTP many times faster than Kbear. and my vote is for gFTP.

issue: ftp/konqueror
you said you don't get anything when you replace http:// with ftp://

Do you have a firewall? Proxy-entries correct?

My configuration:
PC in my company, suse 9.1 with all patches up-to-date. my /etc/sysconfig/proxy:

PROXY_ENABLED="yes"
HTTP_PROXY="<company_http_proxy>:<port>"
FTP_PROXY="<company_ftp_proxy>:<port>"
NO_PROXY="localhost"

Proxy in konqueror-configuration set to the company's autoconf-proxy.

when i ftp by konqueror, I get a small window where I'm prompted for user/password.

you can try with
ftp://www.zoeller-born-bierkruege.de
as a reference. here, it works definitely. good luck :-)

Try typing kbear at in a terminal. That should start it.
i tried so. but i asked a friend yesterday night to download the recommended file (which didn't work from my pc for no apparent reason) and got it by mail. so i'll try kbear today (right now i wait for my spaghetti-water to be boiling ). but bradleyland, thanks for spreading your new wisdom, that's great for all those a few steps behind!! of course, thanks to all the others, too. for placing a screenshot i need the ftp-program working first, so this is on it's way, too!

to be honest: i have no idea. linux-standard installation without any mumbling. i installed skype and did an upgrade yesterday, that's it. i tried the three terminals with your "/etc..." command, it allways responses with "no admittance". i wasn't asked to enter a password either!?

best regards
ungua

edit: since i formatted my lycoris partition in anger i lost my "linux download links", too, if those voting for gftp would provide a link, i'd be grateful. else i'll use google like all these fit people do...

uploading the picture worked, but there was an error:

picture's place: http://home.arcor.de/bergenbilder/linuxquestions.jpg (opening that picture caused another problem for me, konqueror collapsed) - it looks like quite a mess.
before installing linux suse, i emptied my harddisc, unpartitioned it and formated just the first one, with 3gb, in ntfs-format. i have no idea how and why there are two fat16 partitions, i have no idea either why there is so much space displayed - since i only have one single physical hdd!
apart from that, ontopic, i need to say that kbear looks great. it justs disconnects itself all the time. is this a known issue? and why for god's sake is my pc having so much trouble right now!?

best regards and looking forward to more advice
ungua

edit: of course is the second fat16-place my usb stick. i seem to forget things fast these days...

gFTP

I like gFTP. It's in the 9.1 Professional distribution set (use YaST to install it) and is available www.gftp.org. It slips nicely into both GNOME and KDE, is drag-and-drop, and is well-behaved.

ungua,

/etc/sysconf/proxy is a non executable config file. I had to edit it correctly in order to life_update the PC from within my company and to do an ftp from the command line. due to lack of time, I could not test how konqueror behaves if the proxy-file is wrong :-(

That'S because the folder really doesn't exist, I just checked in Firefox. To test it, use a working address like ftp://ftp.suse.com/

the folder exists, see the picture i uploaded some posts above.
some minutes ago firefox collapsed for the first time, trying to find an address at http://www.kvasir.no/kart/ - and i did not use konqueror for a while because it really has a tendency to freeze after some minuttes. would another yast-update help!? this really sucks, i have no idea why it's always me being hit by stupid problems...

The folder doesn't exist on the FTP, at least from what your logs tell me. While it may appear like that when using http, the dir structure for ftp and http isn'T necessarily identical

257 "/" is current directory.
cwd /
250 CWD command successful.

The problem you're having is probably this:
you access your folder with FTP like this
ftp://username:password@host.de

, but when you upload something at root level here, it won't appear at the rootlevel of the http
http://something.host.de

but at http://something.host.de/username

About konqueror: It works well here with KDE 3.3 RPMs, but I do not use it for www browsing

i upgraded firefox now, mainly to get into my gmail-account, which is not possible with konqueror. no problems in the first ten minutes with the new version...

this is how i access my "bergenbilder"-account in a ftp-program:

host: home.arcor.de
user: bergenbilder
pass: *youdontneedtoknow*

result of an uploaded file: http://home.arcor.de/bergenbilder/linuxquestions.jpg

could you translate this into konqueror-works? arcor.de's help says nothing about this kind of uploading.

regards

ftp://bergenbilder:youdontneedtoknow@home.arcor.de
should do the trick, it's the usual notation and works in Mozilla (Firefox), Filezilla, Explorer, Opera ...
