free disk space decreases dramatically...


Dear All,
I'm using suse 9, Every now and then my hard disk free space become 0 bytes, Although I delete many things every time I'm notified that I'm running out of disk space...I don't know what to do.Is there something like temp dirctory in windows which should be deleted ...
Thnx for your help.

Use the command "df -lh" to show the free space per partition.
After you find the partition which is almost full, let say, /home, issue the comand "du -sh /home/*" to show how much each dir inside /home is taking. Let say /home/johndoe is the biggest. Repeat the du command on all files of this user, e.g. "du -sh /home/johndoe/*". Repeat the process until you find the right spot.

There is /tmp in which you should look. Also check /var/log if there are some logfiles getting too large (maybe because of some problems). I like to use kdirstat, which is a KDE program to show disk usage.
