You might wanna try using a Knoppix disk to change the pws.

Down load a version from the site, burn the img and boot from it.
Once you boot into knoppix, you can navigate the panel on the
left to a utility that will enable you to change your pws.
Also, once in knoppix you should be able to use the standard
CLI syntax to change it as well.
