forgot root password

I am owned by a Jetbook with SuSE 9.1 installed (by a custom retailer) and now I have (DUH!) forgotten the supersecret root password I dreamt up some months back, and the store's 'Linux guy' has left.

I am unable to locate my installation disks, having purchased the distro with manuals, dvds, etc.

Is there another generic CD avaliable for this purpose? I have seen Knoppix discussed, but there are so many 'flavors' I'm confused and don't want to further munge my system.

I am a pitiful newbie who could not find the answer by searching the forums. Guidance would be very appreciated, although I know I'm wasting the time of very smart folks. Thanks

For example the answer(s) to this thread:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=507035

which took 3 seconds to find (click Search on the top bar), should contain some information for you. It is not important which live-cd distribtion/version you pick up, or if you pick up at all; there are two things that are important:

1) try to access single user mode from bootloader, this is easier
2) use any live-cd that you can use to mount your partition. That is, virtually any live-cd that has support for the filesystem of the partition.

Thanks for the tip. I got the other info I needed from LQ, and this is sent from the above-mentioned notebook running SuSE 9.1. Now I am 'regular' newbie, not hopeless doofus (fingers crossed) --Wetbird
