For all those who wan't there midi back...

Since my laptops have stopped coming with a built in midi card, suse has seem to have a lot of problems playing midi.
I've now found the 2 easiest ways to play midi in Suse 9.2, for those with midi problems.

Option One: Make sure that yast has installed netscape, netscape plugger and the other browser plugins. You can now right click on any midi file and under "Preview" you will be able to play it using the netscape browser plugin.

Option Two, the better option. On rpmfind.net is an rpm of xmms-midi.....003...rpm
http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/contri...03-1.i386.html

Install it from a command line with rpm -Uvh --nodeps xmms*.rpm

You need the --nodeps as the rpm will not recognize suse's placement of timidity, but it will still run fine. Add your midi's into xmms and play away. :)

their midi back -
their midi back -

not

there midi back...

sheesh.

(and yes, thanks for posting. I didn't have anything to contribute, but I did follow your last thread. It's just that proper spelling goes a long way toward being heard.)

gd2shoe 01-12-2005 11:45 PM

Oh, and it's "want". (not "wan't")

Yes I know gd2, anything to add to the post? Or did you just kill it off the visible area of the posting for no reason.

Midi

I believe Amarok will also use timidity to play midi.

Caeda 01-13-2005 10:30 AM

I believe it does as well, at least that's what the menu says. However, for some reason I can't quite understand, I get no midi output from it or any of the other suse midi programs except for the above mention netscape plugin.

gd2shoe - there was absolutely no need to point out in this thread that Caeda had misspelled some words. This thread is to tell anyone who needs it how to get their midi working. This is a technical forum, not a spelling/grammar forum, typos are allowed (although AOL-speak isn't).

kan eye mispell evarithing tahn and mek it impasible fer peoples too reed?

I am glad that this is a technical forum and not a spelling contest. Even so, I would hope to see spelling at the junior high level here. I often see poor spelling, and it usually doesn't matter. This one just got to me. You have someone who is obviously intelligent making flagrant spelling errors in a thread title. Idiots can make such mistakes. I don't care. They just look like idiots (or people desperately looking for linux help). Caeda, on the other hand, is not an idiot. From the forum page/newsletter, I cannot tell the difference.

P.S.
Caeda: I thought a fresh post was supposed to "bump" a thread back into the visible area, not the other way around. Am I mistaken or missing something here?

(If anyone wants to yell at me some more, you don't need to take up any more space on this thread. Email me at gmail. We shouldn't need to start a new thread over this!)

"Caeda: I thought a fresh post was supposed to "bump" a thread back into the visible area, not the other way around. Am I mistaken or missing something here?"

Does a lot of good for all the people who only browse the un-replied to threads now doesnt it?

Regarding bumping a post: As you know, the threads in a forum are listed in descending order of the latest reply, and thus, threads that do not receive a reply for a significant amount of time can be pushed pretty far down the list pretty quickly. For threads that have been answered, this behavior is good (issues that have been settled do not require any further responses) but for new threads that don't get any replies, this can be bad.

In order to balance this out, the LQ Rules permit the original poster (aka the "OP") to bump their own threads if at least 24 hours have elapsed since the last reply. This will keep the thread on the active list, near the top of the listings, which hopefully will increase the likelihood of a response. Just don't go nuts and bump your own post 6 times a day. -- J.W.

PS, a bump usually is just a response to your own thread, consisting of the single word "bump"
