Dear All,

I have problem in booting Linux from the harddisk. In the course of booting, it just said "Waiting for device /dev/disk/by-id/....-Part6 to appear" and then return to "/bin/sh". However, when I booted from the Installation CD, it's ok. !!

Here are some basis information,
- The Linux version installed is 10.3, from www.opensuse.org.
- I used an old PC to install Linux. It's Pentium 3.
- Before Linux, there's already a copy of Windows XP (one partition C and a data partition D:. My intent is to dual boot two O/S.
- Most of time I accept Linux recommendations during installation, except that I adjusted a little bit in the disk space allcations. Anyhow, I still have Linux native, /home, and swap in place.
- During installation, I did encountered a hang when it install ata_piix and piix. By trial and error, i added options "brokenmodules=ata_piix,piix" during installation and when it hit another error "no repository found", I entered "# insmod modules/ide-generic.ko" in linux console and proceed the installation.

I'm totally new to Linux. Not sure if the steps above is correct. Please let me know if there's anything I can post here in order to clarify the problem.

Which version did you use 32 bit or 64 bit version ?
The live version or install version ?
The 32 bit version also runs on 62 bits machine
The repositore error I found it too an the live version not in the install
version.
Using the install version has also the possibility to check the media first
before installing So you are sure that there are no errors on the media.
Down loading has always the possibility of a error.

So I use the install version
So my advice use the install version

I think the one i installed is Live version (obtained from http://software.opensuse.org/) below,

I tried the "Install Version" of openSUSE 10.3 GNOME but still hit the same error. Any clue?

I try it once from a dvd a buy by a local store but I did not like it

Just happened I only got the GNOME version. Maybe i should try KDE version later on.
May I ask if you encounter, during the installing KDE, installation hanged at the point when loading ata_piix or piix?

The kernel in 10.3 uses the sata/scsi device driver now as opposed to the ide driver. It occasionally gets confused when grub/menu.lst is created. It's "waiting for..." the root partition. It's looking at part6 but that is not the proper partition. I can't tell you which it is on your machine. On my machine it's part9. During the boot process at the grub screen, press 'e' and edit the part6, save and try to boot. When you find the right partition and after the machine boots, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to reflect the proper 'part'.

As an aside, I've noticed that Reiser doesn't have this exact issue. It seems to be limited to Ext3.

No installing suse 10.3 KDE go's without any problem .Including the automatic update during the installian

1) It will be the third screen you see when you start the machine. The first is the POST. The second is the green openSUSE and the third is a black and white grub.

I didn't realise there is an "automatic update" option during installation. Maybe I will try that in case need to reinstall everything.

BTW, are there any SUSE version which don't have such problem? I tried to install openSUSE 9.2 but was never success ...

I tried to press "e" in every screen but has no effect. Anyway, I tried to alter the menu.lst for different parts (eg Part5, Part6, so on) but still cannot boot up openSUSE 10.3 smoothly. Rather exhausting now. :<

I my self have use in the past open suse 9.3.
When open suse 10.3 was there I use 10.3
When installing both version try to make content with the internet
when it fails it told you so.
Ad than you have the change to configure the internet.
If this is going oke Both version start updating
If you configer the internet after installing then you to start updating

update openSUSE 10.3? can you guide me where's the update option?

btw, I'm wondering if the update will alter the menu.lst so that
I don't have the boot problem I had now...

Yes start yast2 you need root password.
Main menu software
Then you will on the right a few options One is on line update
