failed to start x server?


trying to install suse 10.2 and got message "failed to start x server" text mode will run.

how can i get it to run through graphical mode (start x server?)

start x will usally fire up x but i guess it would of started anyway if it liked your graphics card.

I dont think you can startx the setup from the CD. if you dont have enough ram either on the mobo or the vidcard sometimes it causes the install script to run in text mode. You neglected to inclue what hardware you are useing. As far as i know, ur installing on a p2 laptop, then id say no-duh it wont install in gui mode.

sorry

trying to install on a dell optiplex gx150 box running bios a10
the box is standard with p3 933, 256mb ram ( i added another 128 to make 384 total) and i also added a brand new hdd (160gb)

I don't know, I have an exact same Optiplex and I didn't have any problems with 256MB RAM. I suggest you run the media check on your CD's, to be sure all is well there. There should be an option to do this when first installing. Sorry I couldn't be of help, just wanted to let you know that your hardware should be OK with 10.2.

By the way, are you using the onboard video card, or did you add a card? Mine was just the onboard card that worked fine.

yeah just the standard card. hmm ill try checkin the media just to rule it out

thats it, 3xxmb of ram causes the install to go to txt mode. you might need 512. on fedora, i think its 256. if i have less than 384mb on my fedora i only get the txt mode fo SURE... but is there something that the text mode cant do that the gui mode can? its the same insstructions and when u install you still get a gui login
