enable telnet
 

I was wondering if anyone knows how to enable telnet access? I'm an running 9.1 personal. On this machine I have not installed any of the devlop. tools.

Doesn't ssh work out of the box? It works exactly as telnet, except that ssh is secure and encrypt passwords. I think most distros out there are finally disabling telnet and forcing to use ssh instead... give it a shot ;)

SSH worked like a charm. My only issue was getting a client because my line was freaking out.

You are welcome :) I don't know if you are trying to remote control your Linux box from Windows, but if that's the case, take a look at "putty" for Windows. It works great and it's freeware.

Tried telnet. This forum suggested ssh. tried it. new to ssh.
 

I need to learn this new thing I just know about from this forum called ssh. My local library uses telnet. What can I do? I tried using telnet, but error message says,"Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (telnet) isn't associated with any program."

when in window I would telnet to my local library's site: nyplgate.nypl.org

SSH is a text only method of accessing machines remotely. It's like telnet but it's secure. Telnet is not secure. Which is the major difference between them.

Firefox (and all web browsers) are read only for webpages (well ftp and java makes miracles happen)

VNC/Remote Desktop will allow you to access a machine remotely in the GUI (Gnome, KDE, Windows xp, etc) If you are trying to access a GUI remotely I would recommend TightVNC. Works with both linux and windows beautifully.

If you are trying to access your local library via telnet in windows you can use hyper terminal or tera terminal. Hyper term is installed with windows. Tera terminal is much better free, and can be found with a simple google search. Here is a list of equivalents for linux and windows:

Not needing ssh
 

I am new to Unix, I found this post through google, and decided to follow it through the penguin ice hole, I have mozilla (newest version), when I try to open a telnet session through the browser, it will say that there is nothing associated to the protocol telnet, I then go into mozilla's about:config, type in telnet in the search bar, it tells me that it is associated with this application xterm -e telnet %h %p, now I don't need ssh to run this application from the web browser, what I need it to do is link to a command prompt interface, I can do this from both MAC and Windows, but not from unix, if you look at a windows machine it tells you that it is associated to command.exe, and My mac is dead that is why I do not know what it is using (but it did work when I was able to use it).
This is a specific website for my company, and I am positive that I do not need ssh, this is not for security but the site requires that telnet protocol opens from the browser and it will display the command line.
