DVD, DiVX, AVI, VCD on SUSE 10.1-video jumpy, audio OK

Hello,

I am not playing DVDs and other formats on my comp very often. Yesterday I inserted a DVD to check how it is playing on new SUSE 10.1 and I was disappointed. Video is jumpy, slow but audio and subtitles are playing OK. Then I inserted a DiVX movie and that one was even vorse. It takes a long time to start Kaffeine or noatun, MPlayer did not even start to play.
Since SUSE 9.2 I have had no problems until I installed SUSE 10.1 a few days ago. Is there somebody who experience the same problem and is there a solution to solve the problem ???

You could check that you have DMA turned on:

Of course, if you have a dvd player you will have to change the syntax for the hdparm command - check your entry in your fstab.

i am having exactly the same problem! although i have noticed that the problem occured after i had installed Xgl and compiz along with the required NVidia Driver....so maybe if you have a similar setup then the problem may lay in there unfortunatly i do not have a fix.

Anyone???

I have a fix.....boot back into windoze to watch video files as they should be watched..

Linux is just not upto the job ;(

I should say linux ( suse 10.1 ) is not upto the job

I have 10.1 and it works great with video of all kinds, DVDs, divx, anything. Google "hacking suse 10.1" and go to the first result, the JemReports page (I haven't been on this forum long enough to be able to post external URLS).

These steps worked for me, and Jem is very responsive to questions. If you still have no luck sorry, but saying Linux in general/Suse 10.1 in particular "isn't up to the job" is ridiculous. Its completely capable of the task given the correct settings, though I admit the extra work to get licensed materials to run is a hassle. Still, good luck!

OK guys, lets stop the infighting and get back to reality . Yes most Distros are useful to some people own way and if you hate ALL of them go back to Redmond. No "Melek" there are problems with Suse 10.0 and 10.1 and perhaps others- probably related to hardware or drivers or configurations... check out my post here:

Any help with this appreciated. Sorry for having opened an extra thread - I found this here too late.

(I also tried to go the Debian route (Knoppix) but it kept crashing my USB stuff, Suse 10.1 is running more stable on my POS motherboard (asus a8n-vm csm) so far.
