dual monitors in 9.3 Pro

Hi-

I've gotten dual monitors to work on all the rest of the distros that I've ever had (Fedora, RedHat, I can't remember what else, but multiple versions in each), and when I get to SUSE I like it and all but the xorg files are all messed up with their annoying [1] and [0] things instead of just 1 or 0. Anyway, the way I've edited my xorg in the past to get dual monitors working is not being liked by SUSE. Basically the method I use is to make another monitor, device, and screen I think (can't remember the exact terms), and then add a couple of lines in the ServerLayout section that say something like: Screen0 RightOf Screen1, you know what I'm talking about anyone? But when I try to boot x with that the next time it says something like can't find any screens at all. I don't think it likes the fact that I'm trying to make new screens. I'm thinking about switching to like Slack or something because at first I thought I liked the fact that Suse is so much more automated but now I'm not so sure because for instance in the xorg file in SUSE it says "Do not edit this file, it's generated automatically by Sax2" or whatever. Well, if I try the GUI config for dual monitors, the program automatically thinks that I cannot possibly have dual monitors because I don't have 2 graphics cards (I have 1 graphics card Nvidia FX5200 with 2 monitor connections on it).

Sry for the long babbling, hopefully someone can help!

Ok yeah now my mouse is screwed up too and doesn't even work at all. I've tried like 3 different mice too. I tried to do a different install of it and that's how it froze. Very nice. I've never had these quirks before.

I can't help with the dual monitor thing but have some suggestions on the mouse. Alt-F2 for a run window and execute yast. Cursor and tab to hardware then mouse. Enter on mouse will cause yast to look at the mouse and it may start working again. It will work at least until the next boot. Sax also does mouse configuration and may be more permanent.

I have used dual monitors in other distros, but I haven't done it with SuSE 9.3 yet. I plan to though. My implementation of dual monitor is based on the fact that I have an nvidia graphics card. If you have nvidia, and the latest drivers, you can use their twinview feature to achieve dual monitors. Please post back which type of graphics card you have. If it is nvidia, I will post the xorg.conf contents I used to get this going. Meantime, there was an excellent article on this topic in the July 2005 issue of Linux Format magazine. If you can find a copy of that, check out the article starting on page 94, entitled "X11 Set up a dual-head system". This article covers both the nvidia way I used (I got it from this article!) and the non nvidia way.

Sry for the very late reply but if you could give me your xorg that would be great (post I mean). I do have a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 and I've gotten it to work with other distros too but I haven't ever used that twinview feature that you mentioned.

I am having the very same problem... except I have not attempted to edit any configuration files (I'm still pretty new to Linux...)

from SaX2 I click on Multihead / Multihead Mode / Change Configuration and get the message 'Your system does not provide more than one graphics device. More are required to set up a Multihead configuration'

Then I go to Desktop / Monitor / Change Configuration in SaX2... assuming I might be able to 'add' a monitor... but no luck

I am using a laptop with an nvidia gefore fx 5600 go, and a VGA out to a 19" Viewsonic...

Thanks in advance,

Ok thanks for the twinview idea I did not know that way before, but it is much simpler and easier and faster to get working (I got it now)!

[edit]
Nevermind. I should have read the whole thread before I gave my answer. Sorry! Glad you got it working!
