Dual Head not working with XFree86 4.3, Suse NLD, flgrx 8.14.13

running an IBM t41p and trying to get it working for presentations (hook up external display)

resolution on lcd 1400x1050
resolution on secondary display 1200x1024
Using novell linux desktop (suse 9.1 I think...?)
Xfree86 4.3
and the latest fglrx (8.14)

Option: 1 use clone mode.
this provided a readable display on the secondary monitor (or projector), but the secondary screen thinks it is the same size as the primary and a big chunk of my presentation is off screen.

Option: 2 use dual head.
Just flat out doesn't work. screen is gobbledygook, can vaguely make out a blob moving around when I move the mouse.
