Dual Athlon (AMD 760MPX) freezes after initializing both CPUs

I'm attempting to install Opensuse 10.2 on my ASUS A7M266-D system. I've one HDD, 2GB RAM, and a GeForce 5500 AGP card. When I attempt to boot from the CD, the system locks up after it says "Brought up 2 CPUs". I can only see the display when I set it up to use VESA, and have tried all installation options -- the system locks up at the same point every time. I know of the incompatibilities with the APIC and ACPI, and so have disabled them via kernel switches, however the system still locks up at the same point. RAM tests fine, and the system can boot the SUSE 10.0 CD fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried passing a different timer (from tsc) to the kernel (e.g., pmtimer)? Also, (I’m no expert but) it seems apic is enabled on one cpu but disabled on the other. Another guess is: it’s not bringing up two cpus that’s freezing the kernel, it’s whatever comes after that.

I'm not sure how to pass a different timer to the kernel, but the noapic switch was sent. Also, if I recall correctly, all interrupts are handled by only one CPU on the AMD 760MPX chipset.

Did you try passing kernel options such as “notsc clock=pmtimer” (you might try other clocks as well, such as hpet, rtc, etc.).

Not yet, but I'll give it a try once I'm off of work.
