DSL configuration
I installed SuSE 9.2 on my new computer, AMD XP2600, ASUS mobo, etc. It is a dual boot system with Windows 2000. It has the onboard LAN, which works fine under Win 2000.
I have a DSL connection. The DSL modem is plugged into a Linksys wireless router, Model # WRT54G.
I have given up (for now) on trying to get the wireless card to work with SuSE. It just seems to be a lot more trouble than it is worth.
So I decided to set up my DSL connection using one of the onboard ethernet connections, there are 2, a 10-100 and a Gigabit connection). I cannot get it to work. When I go into YAST and open the dsl configuration tool I set it at PPPOE and then it takes me to a window where it wants me to select an ISP, then it wants to know my user name and password for the ISP. It seems to me that it should not need any of this as the connection is already on and active. But to humor it I fill in this info. Then it wants me to set up Dial on Demand, which I did. Then there is a checkbox for "Modify DNS" then "Automatically Retrieve DNS" both of which I checked.
After all this it doesn't work. Any suggestions, besides to put a bullet in the blasted thing and be done with it?
I tried Linux a couple of years ago, and ran it for awhile. I ran SuSE 8.0 for awhike and then Mandrake 9.0. I used them with dial up and managed to network both of them with a windows box. I don't remember it being too hard to set up. It looks like DSL would be common enough by now that it wouldn't require a degree in computer programming to set it up. Sorry about the rant but I had to get it off my chest.

PPPoE is if you were connecting your machine directly to the DSL modem. Set your SusE machine for straight ethernet and use dhcp (assuming the wireless router is providing dhcp).

OK, musicman_ace, I will try that today. Actually that makes a lot more sense than the way I have been going about it. SuSE 9.2 looks pretty slick and I really do want to get it all working. And thanks!

It worked!!!!
Worked like a champ. What had me confused was the DSL config tool in YaST. I figured that since it was there I had to set it up to access my DSL connection. It should have been obvious that it was ALREADY accessed, by my router, and all I needed to do was to set up a ethernet connection to talk to the router.
Anyhow, it works. Life is beautiful. I have internet, I have sound, my DVD drive seems to work, I have music. Now if I can just get that @%&$@# wireless card going...

so..
hello,
are you saying that I should delete the dsl0, dsl1 connections and also provider info from the yast tool, and only configure LAN?

All one needs is a wired ethernet configured to the router. The router is handling the connection from the router to the ISP.

Lets get some info first.
What distro using?
Which kernel?
Type of Network Card?
Gui using?
Router make?
How is the lan side setup ( Static or Dynamic )?
How did you setup the Network Card
Can you ping the router?
Can you ping the network card itself?
Do you see any network status lights flashing when pinging?
Post contents of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0?
Lets stop there and see what you post back.

Your heading far to deep out of box your router should be connected to your ethernet port and suse usually finds it.
All good routers have a config page which you should set the parameters with a webbrowser, should they need to be changed. You should only need to enter your name and password in the config page of the router, save and reboot the rooter.
You normally find your setup page at
either:
http;//192.168.1.1
http;//192.168.8.1
http;//10.0.0.1
check you manual for the default settings.

thanks
Thanks all who replied.
I managed to get it working, I think I missed a few reboots of the PC & the router. now it works.
However the speed seems to be a bit too low, ALTHOUGH checking with a website that asseses my speed/link tells me it is a 2000kbps, the speed seems slower.
Maybe another issues, but I will try to get it fixed myself.
thanks,
rr.
