Downloaded MPlayer i586. After rpm-Uvh command, I get this:

doug@linux:~> rpm -Uvh MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-1.i586.rpm
warning: MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-1.i586.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 5f6842a4
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

I have installed the libmad/lame packages....etc..What do I have to do to correct this? Thanks!

I also get the same error for my LIVE RPM!!!! SUCKS!!!!

Why does nothing work right? Is it because I downloaded the RPM's into my /doug/home folder? Does it make a difference where I download the programs? I had YAST install them, and I also tried extracting them and also the rpm -Uvh command. If so, tell me where to copy them to so I can get these two programs working. Thanks

According to the above output, you are not root. You can only install rpm's as root!

Yep, You were right.

I opened up in terminal where the file was downloaded, then entered su, then password, then the rpm -Uvh <filename> command. Mplayer works perfectly, and the browser plugin also. My Lives program though is installed, but nowhere to be found? It should come up in the Media Editing section by Kino. Is that correct? Thanks

I installed <live-2006.03.17.1-i586.rpm>

AND <live-utils-2006.03.17.1-i586.rpm>. Where do I get these (3) needed rpmlibs they are talking about?? Someone please post where I can get them downloaded. Also, what is the difference between i386, i586, i686 etc.....does it make a difference when I choose to download a program? I always choose i586, rarely i386.

If you can, try to use YaST. It will automatically pick the correct package. Usually, there is only one version of a package available. I don't think this matters on a modern system anyway.

I don't know where you got this live-rpm from and what it is good for. So I can't help here.

i know that all about architecture is i386 (oldest)most compliant for a pc processor
i586 having more optimizasion and i686 most optimizasyon for an intel processor (i dont know different for amd but i can use i586 or i386)
Same main code all but in addition they are having some extension bits
