Does Suse 9.3 support something close enough to Radeon 9550?
 

I am thinking of upgrading to Suse 9.3 from 9.1 I am thinking I'll go a clean re-install, and go to 64 bit. (I have an AMD 64.) One reason for upgrading would be to upgrade KDE, and to get some 3D support.

Here is my question. The Suse site does not list my Radeon 9550 graphics card. Would it be safe to choose one of the others? If so, which one?

I have asked Suse, but they have not yet responded.

I counted 4 or 5 drivers; look for the pciid ( that goes with your card) in suse's video driver base. yast, hardware, graphics card & monitor, change, video card & find a pdiid that matches your card. test before you accept. Turn on 3D.

I followed your link. I found only one 9550, but a couple of 9500's. The 9550 is matched to RV350?? Under 9.1 I already have matched it to ATI RV350 AS, which does not support 3D.

If I understand you correctly, I would make the same match again, but with the new ATI drivers I would be able to get 3D?

If Suse doesn't have your driver preinstalled, then you are going to have to get & compile the ATI driver. I haven't done this for a while as I have Nvidia card now. Just google/linux "ATI your-card" & you should find it as ATI is way past 9500 now. untar or what ever & follow the install directions to the letter & you should have no problems. It's going to be a package for various models of boards but will have yours imbedded. Or go to ATI site & search.

See if rpmsearch or pbone has rpm of your driver.

Alt -- try various 9500 drivers & see if they turn on 3D.

I was able to get 3D with an 8500 board which was a factory 2nd of a 9500 board some time ago.

Don't give up as it will work.
