Display problems with Dell 2005FPW screen and ATI x850 xt pt

I'm new with linux and I'm kind of learning the hard way here...

I have a dell 2005FPW ultrasharp flat panel monitor (very nice) and an ATI x850 xt pt (also very nice) but SUSE 9.3 does not have built in support for them. Thus nothing displays correctly (strange colors, hard to read anything)... I beleive it is at 800x600 or 640x480 with 16 bit color as safe setting

So the first thing I did was went to ati's site and downloaded their driver - "ATI Proprietary Linux x86 Drivers for XFree86 / X.Org Version 8.14.13" (by the way I don't know if i was supposed to download the X-windows stuff.. but actually i think i have x.org 6.8 so maybe i do?)

this is the driver site for my card:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

I had a hard enough time trying to figure out how to install from the root user lol, but don't worry I got through the driver install mostly OK

I also went to set up my monitor, and didn't see Dell's 2005 FPW in the list, so I clicked manufaturer's disk and used my CD... after that my monitor showed in the list so i selected that and thought it was ok, but I'm still having problems (in fact they got worse)

Anybody have suggestions?? I'd love to give linux a try but I have to get past this issue first

I have a similar setup: ATI X800 XT and Dell 2005FPW. Suse 9.3 recognized both with the native drivers (didn't have 3D though). I loaded the ATI Fglrx driver and kernel module from SuSE's website and was able to get 3D to work but I have to run Sax2 from init3 on each boot.

well my monitor displays things (although I still think it has issues, but they might be fixed when the card is properly installed)

the suse built in drivers only went up to the x800 (your graphics card)... the x850 xt pt wasn't on there and im pretty sure it won't use the x800 driver

Like i said, ati has the driver on their site... I thought I ran through it OK but it's still not working (again im new at linux)

thanks for the reply tho, keep em comin if you have suggestions
