dialup connection in suse with gnome

i am a complete newbie to Linux and while i would love a BB connection it is not an option for me at the moment. i am trying to work out how to connect to the net via dial up modem which i have an acer 56k surf external modem. also have a puretec v90 modem which i can use under win 2k but have heard that it is not at all easy to use internal modems under Linux. i cannot find the dialer in SUSE to be able to connect. anyone able to give me any advice

You have not listed the version of Suse you are using but I'll presume its 10.2. Enter YaST and click on network devices in the left panel then click on modem. If your modem is recognized the rest is self explanatory.

it is 10.1 that i am using but should be similar. but it is the configuration that i am really having trouble with. i reinstalled linux this time with the modem turned on and it picked it up (the external one) and can't seem to get scanmodem working to be able to post the output or even try to work out what the output means.

i am now having a problem with it in that it is recognizing the modem (the Acer external modem) and does dial but drops the connection as soon as it makes the connection and comes up with

exit status 3.

click on the log button and it says in there

(d,t) plugin passwordfd. so loaded
(d,t) must be root to run pppd, since it is not setuid-root

i am using suse 10.1 with the kde desktop which i am finding a bit easier than the gnome desktop as i reinstalled linux in trying to get it to pick up the modem which it did. i can't seem to find any information on this anywhere.

You're asking more than I can help. I did my modem after installation and had no problems. If you just installed 10.1 you may want to consider installing 10.2. I had 10.1 originally and before I could get everything figured out I upgraded to 10.2. The YaST works better.

tonimarie,

It seem that the error message is giving you the clue. You must run the pppd as root.
To run it as a root :

1. If you are using the CLI (aka command line interface) just type
su -
enter your password
type the name of the program you are using for dialing for example kppp

2. If you are using the KDE menu. Go to the menu Rmouse/Menu Editor and then select the dialup program for example kppp and Select "Run as a different user" write root. The next time you call the program it will ask you for the password.

Ciao
