/dev/sda1 NOT a valid block device ???
hi. i am running suse 9.1 pro. i have a 4 in 1 card reader hooked to the pc via usb.
my linux is set up for usb and the usbfs. i have been thru tutorials and things seem to be set up automatically by suse to handle this.
but MASS STORAGE DEVICE is not listed in my usb devices area. and when i try to mount /dev/sda1 it says sda1 is not a valid block device. no matter what i use, sda1, sda, sda2, sdb, i have tried dozens...i always get the not valid block device.
i cannot find where anyone has addressed this one concern. it is always passed over in the topics. how do i mount this drive?!! or get the system to realize the mass storage device?
thanks!!

USB in SuSe 9.1
Hi I use this OS and have no problems with the USb thingy ;-) and the only time I get this error is when I load the USb drive when installing the software, try using the run editor and set the rpm check function to on, also set the hardware search to on and then reboot with the USB drive connected to your usb 2.0 port
You should have no problems seeing your usb drive when the "MyComputer" icon is on the desktop - I set mine to automatically open the folder when the usb drive was connected.
Hope this helps

yup so are mine - but they have a whole string of number in front like this
in the konqueror file browser you see drives:/
when it opens you see /media/usb-storage-odd-MassStorage:0:0:0p1
hope this helps?

There is a workaround for certain usb-devices on the suse personal pages. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to make my usb-stick work as well under 9.1 (both professional and personal have problems) It hasn't been fixed yet and I'm no hardwareguru either. Under 9.0 it shouldn't give you the trouble, the difference is the kernel, as noted in a few other posts on the net... It shouldn't be though, cause under Fedora Core 2 and Mandrake 10.0 all works as designed.
