desktop sharing question

Greetings,

I'm a newbie to linux and just started using SuSE 9.1 Personal.
I am using the desktop sharing application.
I am able to connect to my SuSE computer from my windows computer via the VNC viewer. One thing i find kind of annoying about the desktop sharing application is that i must first sign into my SuSE computer and then i can connect to it via the VNC viewer on my windows computer. With traditional VNC, i'm used to being able to log into the console of the remote computer and then being able to sign into the system... not having to first actually go to the remote computer and sign in then back to my desktop system and use VNC to connect to the remote system.

Does anyone know if the desktop sharing application can be setup this way?

Thanks for your time,

*Nick*

Try this on the computer running the vnc server type: vncserver -geometry 800x600 (or whatever resolution you prefer)<press enter>

Thank you for replying but i'm not sure that your suggestion would solve anything.
I am not running a VNC server on SuSE, such as realVNC. I'm using the built in Desktop Sharing application. And how would adjusting the resolution solve the problem of first having to physically go to the remote computer, login to SuSE, and then back to the desktop system from which i want to control the SuSE computer? realVNC solves this problem in windows but from what i've tried and read, realVNC does not behave the same way in linux, it creates a virtual session in linux as opposed to actually putting the remote user at the console.

Thanks anyways though.

I assume you are wanting to connect to your SuSE box and initiate a remote desktop using vnc without the need to enter anything via Konsole? You have to have an Xvnc server session running on the SuSE box, you then create the login information i.e. display manager to use, desktop size, password, etc.

I too have just come across this Remote control feature in SUSE Personal 9.1

There is an article that Novell put up on how to set things up:

http://support.novell.com/techcenter...s/tp10005.html

However, it says that you can view the desktop from a VNCviewer. I have Real VNC viewer setup on my other (windows) box and try to connect to the Linux box. All I get is a timeout. My two machines do talk to each other (directly connected and I can happily ping both ways).

So I am flummoxed on how to proceed?

Please bear in mind I have only had my Linux box up and running for a day and my command line expertise extends to 'ls'.

I have tried setting up the desktop sharing whilst being Root and myself, neither gives me any joy.

Help!

This will do the trick:

Open sax2, go to access control, choose VNC and configure it. Remove the other VNC setup you had. And bingo, you can VNC to your computer getting for instance the login screen or if someone is already logged on - you will see this screen.

This will be the leanest way, meaning it uses as little resources as possible. I use this and I'm really happy about it.

Try it, you won't regret it :-)

This worked in 9.2. I didn't see you use 9.1. But maybe it's in it as well.
