Dell 2405FPW 1920x1200 resolution help SuSE 10.0
Hi,
I searched LQ and I couldn't find the answer that worked. I am trying to set KDE screen size as 1920x1200 which my DELL 2405FPW supports. I ran Sax2 and selected 1920x1200 resolution and I hit OK and testing screen appeared at 1600x1024. It didn't matter what I picked as resolution, on testing screen it was always at 1600x1024. Also KDE's max screen size is 1600x1024. Please help me configure resolution. This is my xorg.conf file. I tried adding 1920x1200 in Modes and Screen section and was unsuccessful. Thanks. ################################################################################################## # /.../ # SaX generated X11 config file # Created on: 2005-10-14T22:02:13-0400. # # Version: 7.1 # Contact: Marcus Schaefer <sax@suse.de>, 2002 # # Automatically generated by [SaX2] (7.1) # PLEASE DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE! # Section "Files" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/URW" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/PEX" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin7/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/baekmuk:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/japanese:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/kwintv" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/uni:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/sgi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/xtest" FontPath "/opt/kde3/share/fonts" EndSection Section "Module" Load "type1" Load "dbe" Load "freetype" Load "glx" Load "v4l" Load "extmod" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "kbd" Identifier "Keyboard[0]" Option "Protocol" "Standard" Option "XkbLayout" "us" Option "XkbModel" "pc104" Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "mouse" Identifier "Mouse[1]" Option "Buttons" "10" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Name" "Logitech USB Receiver" Option "Protocol" "explorerps/2" Option "Vendor" "Sysp" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "Monitor" DisplaySize 520 330 HorizSync 30-81 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "DELL 2405FPW" Option "DPMS" VendorName "DEL" VertRefresh 43-76 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection Section "Modes" Identifier "Modes[0]" #Modeline "1920x1200" 207.81 1920 2056 2264 2608 1200 1201 1204 1245 +hsync +vsync Modeline "1600x1200" 173.38 1600 1712 1888 2176 1200 1201 1204 1245 Modeline "1280x1024" 136.57 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025 1028 1068 Modeline "1152x864" 103.59 1152 1224 1352 1552 864 865 868 902 Modeline "1024x768" 80.71 1024 1080 1192 1360 768 769 772 802 Modeline "800x600" 48.18 800 840 920 1040 600 601 604 626 Modeline "768x576" 44.83 768 808 888 1008 576 577 580 601 Modeline "640x480" 30.25 640 664 728 816 480 481 484 501 EndSection Section "Device" BoardName "GeForce 6600/GeForce 6600 GT" BusID "1:0:0" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" Option "XaaNoPixmapCache" "on" Option "XaaNoOffScreenPixmaps" "on" VendorName "NVidia" EndSection Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480" EndSubSection # Subsection "Display" # Depth 24 # Modes "1920x1200" "1680x1050" "1600x1024" "1440X900" "960X600" # EndSubsection SubSection "Display" Depth 32 Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480" EndSubSection Device "Device[0]" Identifier "Screen[0]" Monitor "Monitor[0]" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout[all]" InputDevice "Keyboard[0]" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse[1]" "CorePointer" Screen "Screen[0]" EndSection Section "DRI" Group "video" Mode 0660 EndSection ################################################################################################## |
Hello!
You have to add the resolution 1920x1200 in sax2. Greetings |
Thanks for you reply. That I already did. See that commented line with 1920x1200? I added those lines but still test screen appeared at 1600x1024. I tried selecting LCD instead of Dell, the screen became blank and I had to reboot.

I finnally was able to fix the problem. I will post resolution for reference. In order to get resolution 1920x1200, you have to modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
This is my Monitor and Screen section of the xorg.conf file and I completely deleted Modes section since it was included in Monitor section. #################################################################### Section "Monitor" DisplaySize 520 330 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "DELL 2405FPW" Option "DPMS" VendorName "DEL" HorizSync 30-81 VertRefresh 56-76 Modeline "1920x1200_60.00" 154 1920 1968 2000 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +HSync -VSync Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync EndSection Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 Modes "1920x1200_60.00" "1680x1050_60.00" EndSubSection Device "Device[0]" Identifier "Screen[0]" Monitor "Monitor[0]" EndSection #################################################################### This line 1920x1200_60.00 means set resolution 1920x1200@60. Previously I had "1920x1200" but it still didn't work. I guess _60.00 made a difference. Learning new things everyday. :-) I will post my xorg.conf upon request. Thanks. |
Hello,
I have been struggling with my Dell 2405FPW screen in SuSE. I have used various resources from around the web to construct an xorg.conf, but cannot seem to get it down. Would you be so kind as to post this? Thanks! Sincerely, Chris |
Sure. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. Thanks.

If you looked at your original conf files you would have noticed it was #'ed out.

Hi EclipseAgent,
Yes, I commented out lines with "Modes 1920x1200" in the original file because it didn't work. Then I replaced with "Modeline 1920x1200_60.00" and it worked. Huh? That's what I said too. :-) Thanks. |
I've a working xorg.conf for this monitor - am currently using Gentoo, but the important bits should still work:
Code:
Section "Module" |
Quote:
CJ |
Quote:
also, there is a gnome screen resolution panel that i keep trying to disable, but it doesnt go away. when i get the correct resolution, will this panel be automatically updated? this is frustrating. CJ |
Monitor, Mode and Screen are the important bits
|
guess i should have clarified further :) i know the inportant bits, but i dont know what parts of those sections are important. i'm confused because when i look at different xorg.conf files (presumably working with the 2405 panel), the monitor, mode, and screen parts of one xorg dont necessarily look like another xorg. i have a few saved as text files, i'll try to give an example of what i'm talking about.
CJ |
Code:
Section "Monitor" also, does it matter which order the sections are in? CJ |
another question, is there any other file that determines resolution besides xorg.conf? i ask, because i have no references to lower resolutions in my xorg.conf, but the screen resolution widget (that wont go away) gives me options for 640x480 up to 1280x1024, which is where i'm at now.
