Darn..No Picasa in open suse 10.2 for me

Hi all,
I downloaded the (picasa).rpm file for Mandriva and installed it using rpm -Uvh xxxxx and it installed and works fine..
So... I tried the same thing for my open suse 10.2 that previously worked fine..It installed but, when I tried to open the package I get a bouncing icon on my desktop for about 10 seconds and some hard drive activity then it quits.. I un-installed it and tried again with the same result..I again removed it and this time tried the .bin install..It installed and said it was successful but the same dancing icon with no start..Now i cannot remove it with the software mgt. tool yast..

Any idea how to correct this in suse10.2 or even how to un-install it?
Thank you,
jolphil

#1 rule in Linux trouble shooting: if it doesn't work from a menu, use a terminal. I'm not sure, but my guess would be picasa's executable is called picasa. Try starting it from a terminal and post any errors you might get here.

[edit]
I just read picasa requires wine. Is wine installed?
[/edit]

Can't help with the uninstall.

Hi,
Thanks for your quick post..
I am sorry I did not mention that..It will not start from either user or su..I looked in the /usr/bin/picasa file and it looks like a link..Iam not sure what that means..owner and group is root..
Thanks again but if it would launch there would be no need to un-install..Least thats my hope
jolphil
PS I just read about wine...I will check..

But if it doesn't run from a terminal it should at least give some sort of error right? what is it?

Hi next day and I'm back with a "never say die attitude"
OK,I tried to compile picasa-wine-2.2.2820-5 after extracting it..
First I tried using ./configure
make
makeinstall
but there were several errors..I went back to the readme in the above package and they said to use the wine installer. OK, use
" ./tools/wineinstall " but it said not to be SU so I went back to my user name and re-tried it and it came back permission denied???
Arrrg!! (what happened to the never say die attitude)

Since I don't know whats going on can anyone help or am I in a sea of despair...
Thank you

Later edit: I went back and installed picasa from rpm in suse 10.0 works fine..Guess I am whipping a dead horse in suse 10.2

Permissions in the build directory are probably screwed. Remove it, untar the tarball again and run
wineinstall.

Debug No Picasa in SUSE 10.2

I just installed SUSE 10.2 (upgraded from 10.0) and I am getting the same symptoms. I've stuffed a bunch of echo's in the various scripts and so far I've found that I can get to the end of the wrapper script in /opt/picasa/bin by commenting out the WINEDEBUG check and then I get the following message.
  • wine: failed to initialize: /usr/local/lib/wine/ntdll.dll.so:
  • cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Instead, this shared library is in the /opt/picasa/wine/lib/wine directory. I'm struggling to understand why it is expecting it to be in /usr/local/lib/wine.

I once was like you all unable to run Picasa in 10.2 x64 (though no problem in 10.1) and then after various upgrades Picasa once again runs.

Unfortunately I have no idea what happened to allow Picasa to once again run but it does, so there is hope.
