CUPS LPR confusion and CD door
 

Hi,

I have recently installed my Brother printer on to SuSE 9.1 Personal (free), via Yast, and thence CUPS, and it seems fine. However, this was my second attempt at it. After my first, CUPS and the Brother .ppd were ok, then I stupidly thought it would be nice to be able to use the lpr (or is it lpd - I can't recall) commands as well, so I'd ran the Brother .rpm. This created a printcap which overwrote the cups file that printcap was linked to. In fact, it was a right mess. Eventually, I managed to reinstall all the cups files via the installation CD, and set up the cups printer again. All is now ok, but, and this is my question...

1) can I use both cups and lpd, or should I stick with just one printer server?

I know I could just try it, but it took so long to sort out last time that I thought I'd better ask someone! (I shalln't run the .rpm again, but I might have the definition file it contained.)

2) Regarding CUPS, some folks say you should put "lp" as user and as group in your system files (/etc/passwd and /etc/group or whatever). Surely this defeats the object of cups having its own users? My cups printer seems to work ok, with only the system user names (not groups) being represented in the lppasswd commands's file. And the "lp"s are unique the the cps config file. Does this make sense? (And what is the lppasswd command's file called?)

3) While I'm here, I must also ask how I can safely remove the CD if I ever again have to reinstall anything from it in the future. I tried unmounting it, and ejecting it. I tried closing the window. It just kept whirring. In the end I had to hold the drive door against its will. On another occaision, I went into a root terminal window and was able to eject it successfully - but when I had inserted the CD I was not root! Surely this is a bit odd?
