creating drive image

I would like to create a restorable image of my suse installation. What I mean by restorable is that I would like to be able to boot to the cd and restore the drive to the state that it was when I created the image. Is this possible with suse? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

The nice thing about linux, which isn't true of Windows, is EVERY SINGLE BIT is in file directory. If you copy whole your whole "/" "folder" you can get everything, including the boot sections and grub to a new drive.

Just make sure you have the partitions done right. That matters, a lot.

There is an application (which I have never used so far) called mkcdrec, which creates bootable disaster recovery CD's: http://mkcdrec.ota.be/

My suggestion would be to just backup your /home/.. folders. This is where all your settings and program data usually lies. Example: ~/.mozilla/ contains all your firefox bookmarks and cookies and extentions and more.

If you just create a separate partition for your home directory, backup or restores go really fast. Just install the OS w/ your programs, link your home directory to your home partition and done, runs just like the old... but thats assuming you're using the same versions and your program data runs on newer versions if you install newer versions.
