I made a mess of my CUPS (SuSe 9.2)and haven't been able to fix it. Worse yet, have not been able to figure out why it happened (ie the corruption; I know what my original mistake was). I bought the retail pack so if the remedy is to reinstall anything, I have the CDs.
Printer is attached to my router (I have two computers on my network: a homebuilt Linux and a Dell PC running XP-Professional)
Problem started when I was using Thunderbird, and wanted to delete some messages. I right-clicked to bring up the context menu and mistakenly clicked "Print" instead of "Delete Message". When the Print dialog box opened, I clicked Cancel, but it proceeded to print the selected messages anyway!
Here's where I messed up: I tried a few things, including power-clearing the printer and logging off (my user account) the Linux, and then rebooting it (from the signon screen's choice of actions).
Problem is now that even though when I go to Yast and do the scan, it sees the printer (a HP 6127), but CUPS reports errors when I try to print a test page ... the CUPS client doesn't seem to acknowledge the printer. BTW, this is a Linux-specific problem, as the printer works fine with the XP.
I'm confused as to whether I totally destroyed CUPS and have to reinstall it, or whether I need to reinstall the whole OS to fix this. Please advise, thanks. Tude Cat
I deleted the printer and re-added it, but it didn't help. Still see the printer listed, but still can't even print a test page, and print dialog boxes not showing this printer.
Yes, I did try that, but it didn't help. I am wondering if there was something wrong with CUPS to begin with, since the Cancel button (in the Print dialog box)didn't work at all.
I finally had enough time to sit with the system and navigate through YAST's printer configuration screens until I got to the CUPS screen where it had a choice to reinstall printer packages (wish I had been able to find that screen originally, but the admin guide doesn't have the information that would have directed me there right away). After the system did its checking, it prompted me to install the first SuSe [installation] DVD, and then I just had to reinstall the printer! Text test page worked, then I printed out ONE email message, was fine.
