Copying etc directory

I am using SuSE 9.0 and I would like to backup my etc directory by burning it onto CD using K3B. However, when I try to do this, it tells me that I do not have permission to copy this file. Is there a way around this? I don't think just backing up my home directory is good enough and would like to get etc backed up as well.

Thanks

Are you root when you do that? Can you run k3b as root? How?

Have you tried logging in as root? That way you can also run everything as root. Perhaps the same could be achieved by using "kdesu" to run k3b, if you are using kde.

As normal user, type the following in a shell
Code:
kdesu <program>
Replace "<program>" with the program you want to run as root.

Another option would be to make a copy of the /etc directory. Something like:
Code:
su
<root password>
cp  /etc  /home/MyUser/temp/etc
chown  MyUser:users  /home/MyUser/temp/etc  -R
