Configure Python-2.5.4

It is telling me when I try and configure Python-2.5.4 on Suse 11.1 'No file or directory found'. I did the 'read me' and it said with some versions to ./configure which I also tried with the same results. From what I have read I need this to make the Option Quicksilver modem driver work.
Are you supposed to remove earlier versions of python?

I would not try and install your own version of python not shipped by your distro. The major reason being is that a lot of packages and programs depend on it. some of which could be critical to your system. So if you install your own version of python how do you know they will still work? And if they do then you have an maintanence issue.

What you need to use instead is yum. Yum is a command line tool which allows you to install packages compatible with your distro. It will also maintain any packages installed by yum and perform updates when neccessary. To use it you simply become root using su - on the command line then type yum install python. Then viola python will get installed, its that easy.

Thanks for your replies, after more searching it appears Suse uses a file called 'libxml' with python included. I can not check this out now because the only way I have here at home to get to the internet using linux is by the option modem that I am trying to install the driver for. I drive over to my daughters house which has wireless about an hour from here.
