Coldplug taking too much time, earlier it was not so
Since I have installed KDE 3.3.1 (full! all 99 packages), my system has become slower than it was. So, I tried to disable some services that I was not using, and left all those which were incomprehensible to me, since I am a newbie.
My computer's boot time has also increased very much, which is due to some cold-plug service. I am unable to decide what is this process. It takes around 10 seconds to load this service while booting. Earlier it was not.
What is the problem here? Is it safe to turn off this service? What does it do, and why it is taking so much time.
The KDE issue is strange, since my SuSE 9.1 runs even faster since I updated to KDE3.3.1 Maybe you run too many apps the same time?!
For coldplug, SuSE has released a couple of fixes to speed up booting. Maybe you could run a YOU update. I don't know if you could switch it off, since most of your hardware is configured with coldplug/hotplug.
I guess it should not be KDE, but something else...
Actually, I have two SUSE 9.1 systems installed on my computer. I generally work on the the first, and the second is for testing things. So, the second partition is not *updated*. And it boots normally.
The only problem is with coldplug in the first partition.
Is there a way to now what the coldplug is doing when it loads?
Good post - my Suse hangs about for ages on cold plug. I did try switching it off but my system wouldn't work. One thing that I found did speed up the cold plug things was switching off the power save service.
