I have Suse pro 9.3 installed with KDE 3.4.0b, and that damned green login screen annoys the hell out of me. Is there a way to change the login screen to a less than whole screen, or color change, or something? I've looked EVERYWHERE and can't seem to find a thing about it. And since I have this really nice background image that I would LOVE to see at login....

Did you try KDE Control Center -> System Administration -> Login Manager?

Yes I did. And as far as I can find, I can change the splash screen, and a great many other things. But the actual screen that shows for user login, that doesn't seem to be an option. At least, not that I can find.

Hmmm. I thought that the theme was related to how the windows looked and (to a certain extent) acted. I have tried several of the KDE built in themes, but I suppose that won't hurt to try. Thanks!

Change Behavior of KDE Login Manager (KDM)



Applies to: SUSE LINUX 9.3
Symptom
You are missing the feature whereby you click on a user picture in KDE login manager (KDM) to log in to your SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3.
Solution

Edit /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager as user root and change the entry
DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="SUSE"

to
DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME=""

To accomplish this, you have two options:

1. Use YaST2 sysconfig editor:
* Start YaST2
* Go to 'System' -> '/etc/sysconfig Editor'
* Open: 'Desktop' -> 'Display manager' -> 'DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME'
* Delete SUSE
* Click on finish

2. With an editor of your choice. You do not need to start a graphical session as root, just follow these few steps:
* Press ALT+F2 -> type konsole -> and press run
* Type su - and press Enter
* Enter the password for the user root (please note: no * or other signs will be displayed)
* Open the file /etc/sysconfig with your favorite editor (for more information please have a look at ASCII Editors (http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/0...ii_editor.html) )
* Change DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="SUSE" to DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME=""
* After you have made these changes, save the file, exit the editor and run the command
SuSEconfig --module kdm3

To complete all changes, please log out of your current session. The next time KDM starts, you will be able to log in using the user pictures again.

Fedexguy, that seems to be exactly where I'm going here, good call! And thanks alot! The bad news is, that didn't work, darnit! At least now I have a better starting point in the SuSE KB, so maybe I can make some progress there. Thanks dude!

I have not yet run that patch, in the login manager did you select display the users?

Symptom
Following an update from SUSE LINUX 9.2 to 9.3, you can only log in over XDM, not over the KDM login manager.
Solution

Proceed as follows to change the login manager:

1. Start YaST2.
2. Go to "System" -> "/etc/sysconfig Editor".
3. Open "Desktop" -> "Display manager" -> "DISPLAYMANAGER" and change the entry to the desired login manager (gdm, xdm, kdm).
4. Click "Finish".

can somebody help us out, I did a clean install of 9.3 and i follow the solution from portal.suse.com and that did not fix the issue at hand
i went into the dispaymanager_kdm_them and took out suse (done) i also went into the login manager and had no hidden user- when i power cycle the computer i see my splash screen that i set but it goes to the kde login manager -wtf! I would like some info on how to resolved this problem
