CDROM found/not found SUSE 9.2
 

I just received a new PC with SUSE 9.2 preinstalled. When I put a disk in the DVD-RW it is accessible and files can be read from it easily.

However, when I run Yast2 to install some additional software, it asks for a disks to be inserted in the drive and never finds it. I get the error: Media not attached.

Also when I run a flight simulator, the DVD can be used to install the program but during operation the flight simulator stays in demo mode because it can't find the DVD disk that is sitting in the drive.

A few hints would be appreciated.

Does it ask you for dvd or cd?
Also, you need to click on the yast button that says "Installation Sources" and make sure it thinks your going to use a cd or dvd in the drive, as it may have been loaded off of a network and not see the drive as a source of files.

For the games, you'll have to make sure the computer knows where the dvd drive is. Linking it to /dev/hdc should be good enough for suse 9.2 unless you have multiple drives.

Yes the program asks for the disk to be inserted.

I didn't ask if it askes for the disk to be inserted, or for you to check you device settings.
You need to look first in yast, and find out what it thinks is the source of the installation packages. It will say "DVD 1" or "CD 1" in the installation software even if it is set to FTP install.

Second, you need to check the settings "in the program that cannot find the disk" as it may be looking for a non-existant device.

at the recommendation of the hardware supplier I reinstalled SUSE 9.2 from DVD and now the CDs are properly recognized. Apparently they do an install over nfs and this may be the cause.

This problem is now solved, now busy reinstalling the Nvidia drivers.
