hi.good day.im just install suse 9.1.my problem is my Xwindow wont load eventhough my vga driver and monitor was exactly detected.when im trying to login as a root,immediately the screen goes to black color my monitor light keep blinking all the time.theres a sentence "sync out of range".by the way,my monitor is samsung 753s.thats my problem right now.

Hate to ask, but I remember my SuSE 9.1 machine only liked the init command. IF you're in runlevel 5, and X isnt open, you have major issues, but if you're in rnlvl 3, just init 5 and see what happens.

did you run the display test during the install?

ya.im already did.its work well but when its boot to the system automatically the monitor screen goes to blank color nothing appear except "sync out of range".by the way,i have use on the other distro such fedora3 and its work succesfully.can anyone help me about this thing.thx

I am having the same problem. I've got a Samsun 700DF that Suse9.2 detected as a Samsung 75ds. My Video card (ATI Radeon 8500 LE) detected perfectly during the install and the video test screen had no problems at all. The problem only occured after all of the configuration was completed and Linux restarted. Instead of displaying the login box, I get the "Synd out of range" message. I can switch to a command line with CTRL + ALT + F6 and login as root or as a user, but when I try to startx I get a message stating that the x server is already running.

My best guess here is that it is a setting in the XFree86 configuration that the monitor cannot support. I just can't figure out what it might be. I can still access my system from the command line, I just don't know where to look for an answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

These basic guidelines should get you started in the right direction:

-- get the stats on your monitor

--boot the box and get to the command line (as root) edit the "/etc/inittab" file to run level = 3.
look for the following line
"id:5:initdefault:" and change it to "id:3:initdefault:" and make sure you save the file. (only the number changed)

-- Then reboot. This will boot the system into multiusers without the GUI. Leave the run level this way until you fix your problem.

-- type "yast" this will get you into the text mode YAST menus. under hardware are the settings for the monitor that you are looking for. YAST is a great system so you should be able to figure it out.

--once you exit YAST and have changed your settings, while logged in, at the command line you can issue the startx command to make sure the setting are right and you are able to use KDE/Gnome/or whatever.

--if it works and you can leave the run level alone (good for servers) or switch the level back to 5 and reboot to the GUI.

Thanks for the tip, merize147. Unfortunately, Yast won't let me change the monitor settings. It launches ok and lets me select the video card and monitor from the list. Once I select "Change" the screen flickers for a second and I get the "Sync out of range" box on my monitor and cannot continue. I let is sit for about 10 minutes before I started over.

Nevermind. I got frustrated and reinstalled Suse9.2 this evening. Lo and behold, it now works beautifully. I must have kludged something during my first install. It now works great and I'm very happy with all the new features. Thanks for your help.
